Masai Mara Game Reserve

Masai Mara, land of the Maasai, is famous for wildebeest migration, large prides of lions, endangered black rhino, and endless plains that stretch from western Kenya into the Serengeti plains in Tanzania. We can take you here.

The Game Reserve is famous for the annual wildebeest migration and large prides of lions. The Masai Mara's altitude is above 5.000 ft. It yields a climate milder and damper than in other regions. The grassy landscape and the nutrient wealth for the great herds are maintained by the abundant rains that start from November through June, as a fusion of the two rain seasons (long and short) typical in other areas of Kenya. In the hills and plains, grasslands are scattered with acacia trees, thick bushes, and shrubs. The Masai Mara landscape is subdivided with narow ravines that provide a perfect breading ground for lions.

The reserve was established in 1961 and is located west of the Great Rift Valley. The Masai Mara is extension of the Serengeti plains in Tanzania. The Mara River, the reserve's backbone, traverses north to south heading for its westbound way into Lake Victoria, through the Serengeti National Park. This course is the natural barrier crossed every year by the large migratory herds of wildebeests and zebras, which march across the two parks. Nearly two million wildebeest and 500,000 zebras move in a quest for the best pastures, finding along the way the crocodile-crowded river.

The peak season starts from July to October, where seasonal visitors come to witness the wildebeest migration. The reserve supports many of Africa’s most popular wild animals, including, lion, cheetah, hyena, elephant, leopard, black rhino, buffalo, and hippos.

Also, the Masai Mara is a bird lover’s paradise! There are over 500 resident species of birds in the park including ostrich, secretary bird, marabou stork, larks and sunbirds as well as the Lilac-breasted roller. Morning and afternoon game drive will offer spectacular wildlife- viewing opportunities!

Optional: You can go on a balloon safari experience over the Masai Mara as the early morning sun rises and the animals are more active. Maasai Simba Camp can take you to Masai Mara. Email us and learn how you can visit the Masai Mara with us.
